Video script timer
Paste your script, pick a speaking pace and see how long it takes to say. Text in [square brackets] is read as a stage direction and left out.
How it works
- 01
Paste your script
Paste the words you will say. Put stage directions in [square brackets] and they are not counted.
- 02
Pick a pace
Choose slow, natural or fast, or drag the slider to your own pace. The presets are assumptions, so set the pace that matches your voice.
- 03
Check the length
See the speaking time and whether it fits 15, 30, 60 and 90 seconds, then cut or add lines until it does.
What you get
- Counts spoken words, not characters, and also counts words in languages written without spaces, such as Japanese and Chinese.
- Pace presets of 130, 150 and 170 words per minute, plus a slider from 100 to 220 for your own pace.
- Checks the length against 15, 30, 60 and 90 seconds and shows by how much you are over.
- Free, no signup, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
How is the speaking time worked out?
The script is split into words, text in square brackets is left out, and the word count is divided by the pace you chose. The result is rounded to the nearest second.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a reading pace, not a measurement. Real speaking speed changes with the speaker, the pauses and the style, and numbers and acronyms usually take longer to say than they look. Read your script aloud once and move the slider to match.
What pace should I choose?
The presets are assumptions: 130 words per minute is slow, 150 is natural and 170 is fast. Time yourself reading a paragraph and set the slider to your own pace.
Is my script stored anywhere?
No. The time is worked out in your browser as you type. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and nothing is saved.
